UPDATE ON CRIME LEGISLATION
The following Bills have now been passed in both Houses and sent for final printing:
    - The Police (Civilian Oversight) Authority Act, 2005 - to be published as       law in Gazette.
    - The Criminal Justice (Plea Negotiations and Ag reements) Act 2005 - to         be published.
    - Firearms (Amendment) Act, 2005 - to be published.
    - Anti Extortion Provisions
    - The Larceny (Amendment) Act, 2005 - to be published.

Other pieces of legislation required more time to address legal technicalities, including The Amendments to the Evidence Act. The Law Reform (Notice of Alibi Evidence) Act, 2005 and the Committal Proceedings Act, 2005 have not yet been passed in the House of Representatives (Read this update or

... This weekend, as I listened to the news and read the papers, I was heartened by the solidarity expressed for this initiative. On Sunday, I was profoundly saddened by the photographs of the widow of Inspector Lascelles Walsh and the mother of six-year old Shanika Anderson, as they attended the funeral services for their loved ones.

I reflected and thought that we have been suffering as a nation for far too many years. We cannot continue living this way. We have to take a stand and demand a change. This symbolic action today is our declaration to the political directorate and the many relevant authorities that effective and focused action is a must....
