PSOJ JOB CREATION AWARDS
sponsored by
Updated February 2008

Overview on

PSOJ/Cable and Wireless Job Creation Awards

The idea of the Job Creation Awards was conceived by the PSOJ Economic Policy Committee and sought to recognise companies that were contributing to the economy through the creation of sustainable jobs. The vision became a reality in January 2002 when Cable & Wireless (Ja.) Ltd. committed to sponsor the Awards programme and has continued to do so for the past five years. In January 2008, the Awards function received an injection of financial support with the partnership of National Commercial Bank Jamaica Ltd. as our second sponsor. We welcome this alliance and embrace NCB for their support in encouraging the spirit of entreprenuership.

An important and critical component of a healthy and vibrant economy is the ability to provide sustainable jobs for its people. Despite the challenges in the economy, it has been encouraging to note that companies are still creating sustainable jobs. The PSOJ is pleased to have been able to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship and to recognise and celebrate the successful achievements of those companies that have expanded and created new employment opportunities.

Three categories of Awards are given. The “ Job Creation Award” recognises companies or entrepreneurs who have made new investments within the last twelve months and have created a minimum of twenty-five (25) new employment opportunities. The ‘Small Business Award’ recognises companies that have created at least five jobs in the last year. The award, ‘Companies in operation for over 40 years’ is bestowed on companies which have been creating jobs for a sustained period to highlight their support for job retention.  Since its inception, over 200 Awards have been made.

Attendees at the Job Creation Awards functions generally include leaders of the business community, the awardees for the month, Cable & Wireless’ and NCB’s executives and members of the media.  The function is held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:45 – 9:00 am.

It is our continued hope that government policies will seek to foster a more business friendly environment, so that more companies will be able to invest and expand and thus create more sustainable jobs.

Speech made by Mark Myers – President, Jamaica Chamber of Commerce
At PSOJ Job Creation Awards held Tuesday November 27 at the Terra Nova Hotel

Once again it seems that regional investors are more bullish on the business opportunities available in Jamaica than we are. The reported offer by Angostura for 49% of Lascelles shares at a price of US$921 million dollars is just the latest in a series of investments by overseas businesses. I would like us to ask ourselves,,, if we had that kind of money how many of us would have made that investment??? (Read more)
